Catalyst Businesses in Several Global Chemical Companies

In a previous blog, I showed the reporting segment names used by 38 global chemical companies.  (Click here to see that blog.)   Four of the 38 companies have catalyst in one, or more, of their reporting segment names (Albemarle, BASF, Clariant, and Umicore).

In this blog, I show in the table below details on what those four companies (Albemarle, BASF, Clariant, and Umicore) indicate in their annual reports about their catalyst businesses.  I also reviewed  the annual reports of the other 34 companies as to what catalyst businesses they have, even though they have no catalyst reporting business segments.  The other companies that indicate catalyst businesses are also presented in the table, along with what these companies indicate in their annual reports about their catalyst businesses.  Twenty-seven of the 38 companies report no catalyst businesses and are not listed in the table below.

The catalyst businesses pursued by these eleven companies (the ones in the table above) are  impressive.  These businesses are based on active research and development (R&D) programs.  The results of these R&D programs contribute significantly to society.

Some further conclusions about these company catalyst businesses are:

  • Catalysts are important in the production of many chemicals;
  • Two companies – BASF and Umicore – are working on catalyst recycling: and
  • FASF, Evonik, and Umicore are working on catalyst technologies related to renewable energies (batteries, biodiesel production, fuel-cells, and precious metal catalysts).

The 38 companies use a total of 146 reporting segment names or an average of four segment names per company.  Two companies use the most with ten names: BASF and Solvay.  Five companies use only one segment name:  Air Products & Chemicals; FMC; Kemira: Linde; and YARA.

Two general approaches seem to be taken in selecting names:  1) a selection tending to use broader, business sector names such as: Electronics & Imagery; Energy Technologies; and Health Care and 2) more specific, technically functional names such as: additives; coatings; and intermediates.  This second approach is used much more often.

Reporting segment names used most often ( four or more times) are : additives (5 times); catalysts (4 times); coatings (4 times); and intermediates (5 times).

Twelve companies use “materials” in one of their segment names, which suggests to me an expansion of chemical company technology interests into the material sciences.

The listed 146 resorting segment names, used by 38 of the largest global chemical companies, seem to me to give a fairly comprehensive indicator of what the chemical industry consists of, what it does, and is interested in.
