Materials Index ETF (FMAT), can provide performance data for the group of
companies in the fund.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Such data might
be useful for individual companies benchmarking their data to.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Data such as the average price to earnings,
earnings growth, sales growth, cash flow growth, and dividend yields for the
companies in the index can be provided by the ETFs.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Individual companies might use this data to benchmark
their performance to.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Also, ETF’s price charts, provided by the ETFs, can be useful
in comparing how investors viewed the value of the funds’ holdings over time. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Usually, the fund’s price-over-time can be
compared directly to other indexes over time, such as the Standard & Poor’s
500 Index.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This comparison can show how
the chemical industry, represented by the ETF, is doing against wider, broader
indexes of economic performance.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The FMAT has approximately 120 companies in its index, most
of which are chemical companies, or companies very relevant to the chemical
industry.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Here is a list of companies
in the FMAT index:<o:p></o:p></p>

of how chemical companies interact with minerals. The following provides various interactions between
chemical companies and minerals. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"></p><ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Chemical companies sell chemicals to assist in the extraction
of minerals from mined materials.
Companies that sell such chemicals include: Arkema; BASF; Clariant; Olin;
and Solvay.</li><li>Chemical companies rely on minerals as raw materials for producing
their products. Companies that rely on
minerals for raw materials include BASF; Mosaic; Solvay; Umicore; and Yara.</li><li>Chemical companies own mines and process materials mined
from mines to obtain minerals. Companies
that own mines and process materials for minerals include Albemarle; Chemours; and
Clariant.</li><li>Chemical companies, in addition to providing chemicals for
assisting in extracting minerals from materials, provide consulting services
related to minerals. These services
include ways of recycling minerals. Companies
that provide such services include Akzo Nobel; Clariant; and Umicore.</li></ul><o:p></o:p><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p><p>Like other natural products important as raw materials for providing
products in demand by an increasing global population, the supply and use of
minerals will be important. The ways in which
chemical companies use and interact with minerals, for example, those provided above,
need to continue to be researched, developed, improved, and implemented. </p>Richard Torianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16717506403212081375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1707644296682469741.post-85106165114986633062022-10-01T09:30:00.001-07:002022-10-01T09:31:03.601-07:00Chemical and Metal Shortage Alert – September 2022<p class="MsoNoSpacing">The purpose of this blog is to identify chemical and metal

by fossil fuels is being reflected by a few chemical companies in their public announcements
and annual reports. A major reason for
this interest is the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">Arkema stresses in its 2021 annual
report that 33% of its total electricity used in 2021 came from nuclear energy
versus 37% from fossil fuels and 18% from renewables.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">Dow Chemical’s management has
announced recently that the company expects to employ a small modular reactor
within a few years at one of its chemical production’s sites.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">Kemira has invested in a Finnish
nuclear plant in order to increase its use of nuclear energy in its electricity
requirements.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Kemira is projecting that
its electricity use in Finland, now approximately 40% provided by nuclear
energy, will increase to approximately 75% provided by nuclear energy in the
coming years.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">Synthos is partnering with the nuclear
energy company, GE-Hitachi, in developing small modular reactor use at its
chemical sites in Poland. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The technical developments of small modular reactors apparently
is progressing significantly to where their use at chemical plants is being
seriously considered, e.g., by Dow and Synthos.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>A World Nuclear Association report provides details on the use of small
modular reactors in such applications as at chemical plants.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Click <a href="https://www.world-nuclear.org/information-library/nuclear-fuel-cycle/nuclear-power-reactors/small-nuclear-power-reactors.aspx " target="_blank">here</a> to read that report.<o:p></o:p></p>

when produced using synthetic biology technologies, and used in significant quantities,
might significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions compared to how they are mostly
produced now. </p>

to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (click <a href="https://www.eia.gov/nuclear/" target="_blank">here</a> to go to its website),
U.S. nuclear power plant operators in 2020 purchased 48.9 million pounds of
triuranium octoxide (U3O8, from which uranium is obtained).</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">And 47% of this purchase (22.98 million
pounds) was from Kazakhstan, Russia, and Uzbekistan.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">As
of this date, uranium purchases from Russia have not been sanctioned due to
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">A good
reason for this is that without these imports, U.S. nuclear power plants likely
would have a very difficult time finding other vendors to make up the amount of
purchases made from Kazakhstan, Russia, and Uzbekistan.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Two
countries, Canada and Australia, are large producers of uranium (in 2020 Canada
produced approximately 8.6 million pounds of U3O8 and Australia approximately
13.7 million pounds).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Uranium purchases
from Canada and Australia are possible replacements for some of the Kazakhstan,
Russia, and Uzbekistan imports, but probably not enough to replace the Kazakhstan,
Russia, and Uzbekistan imports.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Another
uranium source is increased production by uranium producers in the United
States.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>However, the U. S. producers
would have to greatly increased their production amounts.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In 2020, uranium production in the United States
was approximately 13,000 pounds, which is miniscule compared to the amount of U3O8
needed for purchase by U.S. nuclear power plants. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It is not likely that even an increased production
in the United States and increased purchases from Canada and Australia could
replace any time soon what is currently imported from Kazakhstan, Russia, and
Uzbekistan.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This seems to be leaving the
United States vulnerable to not meeting its U3O8 purchase needs.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">The
continued long-term reliance on Russia (and Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan; two
countries with close ties to Russia and likely strongly influenced by Russia)
seems to be an uncertain and undesirable reliance, giving unfolding
geopolitical situations due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">A
conclusion from the above is that increasing the production of U3O8 in the
United States makes sense. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Companies
producing U3O8 in the United States include Cameco; Encore Energy; Energy
Fuels; Laramide Resources; Uranium Energy; and Western Uranium and Vanadium.</span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">As
an added consideration, the Biden 2021-passed infrastructure bill calls for
increases in nuclear power production in the United States, likely to further increase
the demand for uranium.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This bill’s call
for increases in nuclear power production is consistent with a global-wide
increased emphasis on using nuclear power to help meet reduction goals in
fossil-fuel based energy.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Globally, fifty-two
nuclear reactors were under construction during 2021, reflecting this globally
increased emphasis on nuclear power (and adding to an increasing global need
for U3O8).<o:p></o:p></span></p>

developing a hydrogen ecosystem in the Normandy Region of France. The project is intended to decarbonize the production
of hydrogen intended for not only industrial use but also as a fuel. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The two companies have signed an agreement in which Air Liquide
will assume decarbonizing hydrogen production at TotalEnergies refinery at Gonfreville
by using the Air Liquide CryoCap system.
This system uses cryogenic and liquefying technologies to remove carbon dioxide
produced during the TotalEnergies refining processes. The blue hydrogen produced will be entered
into Air Liquide hydrogen streams, which will be made available to customers
and for use as a fuel. Air Liquide is
already producing decarbonized hydrogen at its plant in Port Jerome, also using
the CryoCap technology to remove and store the carbon dioxide. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Both companies have indicated that they intend to build electrolysis
plants to produce green hydrogen, which will be added to the Air Liquide
hydrogen streams. For green hydrogen to
be produced by electrolysis, renewable energy needs to be used. As it turns out, the French Government is in
the process of selecting an applicant to build a wind farm off the coast of
Normandy, designed to produce between 900 MW and 1,050 MW of electricity. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The French Government, as a European Union member, is an
active developer of hydrogen as a fuel. TotalEnergies
and Air Liquide also are committing substantial resources to developing hydrogen
as a fuel. These commitments could very
well create one of the first, if not the first, hydrogen ecosystems in Europe.<o:p></o:p></p>

shortages reported on the Internet. The
sources of the information reported here are primarily news releases issued on
the Internet. The issue period of the
news releases is March 2022. </p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Section I below lists those chemicals and metals that
were on the previous month’s Chemical and Metal Shortage Alert list and
continue to have news releases indicating they are in short supply. Click <a href="https://chemicalindustrydata.blogspot.com/2022/03/chemical-and-metal-shortage-alert.html" target="_blank">here</a> to read the February 2022 Chemical
and Metal Shortage Alert list. </p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Section II lists the new chemicals and metals (not on the
February alert). Also provided is some
explanation for the shortage and geographical information. This blog attempts to list only actual
shortage situations – those shortages that are being experienced during the
period covered by the news releases. Chemicals
and metals identified in news releases as only being in danger of being in shortage
status are not listed. </p>

(Air Liquid; Air Products and Chemicals; Linde; Messer; and Nippon Sanso
Holdings) were reviewed to learn what plans and actions the companies have to pursue
hydrogen as fuel revenues. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Here are statements from the company’s annual reports about interests
in pursuing hydrogen as a fuel for generating revenues: </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Air Liquide </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- have multiplied annual
expenditures on hydrogen technologies by 20<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- inaugurated an electrolysis facility
in Canada in 2021<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- convinced that hydrogen will play
a major role in the energy transition<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- has a major initiative to produce
a low-carbon hydrogen ecosystem in the Normandy industrial basin </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Air Products and Chemicals </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- developing carbon-free hydrogen products
that will support global transportation and energy transitions away from fossil
fuels<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- have hydrogen fueling stations
that support commercial markets in California and Japan </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Linde </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- steam methane reformer in Ontario
can now supply hydrogen, sufficient to fuel up to 1,000 vehicles a day<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- starting up in 2022, the world’s
largest PEM electrolyser; will supply industrial customers through company’s existing
pipeline network </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Messer </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- by joining the European Clean
Energy Alliance in 2020 will be able to contribute Messer’s extensive expertise
in the field of industrial gases to promote the efficient and effective use of
green hydrogen, with partners throughout Europe </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Nippon Sanso Holdings (Taiyo Nippon Sanso – Japan; Matheson –
USA; Nippon Gases – Europe) </p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- working on the development and sale
of hydrogen fuel stations (fixed and mobile)<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- believe can manufacture large quantities
of economical blue hydrogen<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- researching hydrogen combustion<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in;">- focusing on hydrogen to
contribute to a carbon-neutral society </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">These statements indicate to me that these companies have strategic
plans to use their long-term, well-developed technical expertise related to
hydrogen use as an industrial gas to apply that experience and expertise to
using hydrogen as a fuel. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Hydrogen use as a fuel to substantially replace fossil fuels
will involve many technical and resource challenges.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>That these global gas companies, adept at hydrogen-related
technical and resource challenges, are now indicating serious strategic goals
to also develop hydrogen as fuel business seems important to me.<o:p></o:p></p>
